Speaker:

on today's episode of the podcast, I

am going to walk you through YNAB's

2

:

original four Rules for Simple Budget.

3

:

Speaker: Welcome to the

Money Clarity Podcast.

4

:

I'm your host, Lindsey Ciarrocca.

5

:

I'm a YNAB Certified Coach

and a Certified Money Coach.

6

:

And I am here to help you stop

feeling stressed about money.

7

:

Together we'll get your finances organized

so that you can finally feel confident

8

:

about not only spending and saving,

but using your money as a tool to go

9

:

after your biggest, wildest dreams.

10

:

Let's dive into today's episode.

11

:

Alright, so if you've been around

my world for any amount of time,

12

:

you probably know that YNAB is

my favorite budgeting software.

13

:

Not only do I use it personally and.

14

:

By personally, I mean I have our

household budget in it, but one

15

:

for each of our two businesses.

16

:

But I have taught the majority of my

clients how to use it as well, and

17

:

I found that once they're able to

learn the ropes YNAB can be a total

18

:

game changer for their budgeting.

19

:

But why is that?

20

:

It's because YNAB, while Yes.

21

:

It's a piece of software that

helps you see your numbers.

22

:

They also have a system.

23

:

And they originally

started with four rules.

24

:

So YNAB has actually been around for

25 years, I believe it has been now.

25

:

And so they started with these four rules.

26

:

And you know, rules sound a

little restrictive, right?

27

:

So, but they're really meant to

guide your budgeting success.

28

:

So here are the four rules and how I

interpret them into my own budgeting.

29

:

And then next week we'll

talk a little bit about.

30

:

Uh, the shift that they've moved into and

the five questions that they now follow.

31

:

All right.

32

:

Rule number one, give every dollar a job.

33

:

So you've likely heard me say

this if, again, you've been around

34

:

here for any amount of time.

35

:

Rule number one, give every dollar a job.

36

:

So, while the sounds simple than

it is, this is really also the key

37

:

to taking control of your money.

38

:

It means.

39

:

It just means giving

every dollar a purpose.

40

:

So by doing this, you gain clarity

on where your money's going, and you

41

:

can eliminate any wasteful spending.

42

:

So the way, the way YNAB helps you

do this is by letting you divide your

43

:

checking account balance into categories.

44

:

This is crucial because mental accounting.

45

:

It's a real problem, right?

46

:

We've all been there.

47

:

We think we can afford something.

48

:

We have a couple thousand dollars in

our checking account, and then boom,

49

:

a bill hits that we totally forgot

about, and you're a little on edge.

50

:

YNAB helps prevent this by

showing you exactly what you have

51

:

available in every single category,

and sometimes that's nothing.

52

:

So here's how it works.

53

:

So you are shopping.

54

:

You see a shirt in YNAB.

55

:

You go to your clothing category

and you see 20 bucks, your shirt

56

:

costs 18, you're good to go, right?

57

:

Maybe even it's on sale for $14.99.

58

:

Even better.

59

:

I love a great sale, so you can go

ahead and buy that shirt guilt free.

60

:

So why giving every dollar a job is key.

61

:

Again, mental accounting add

just unnecessary complexity

62

:

to managing your money.

63

:

You can simplify your finances

with YNAB and its first rule

64

:

of give every dollar a job.

65

:

YNAB provides a user-friendly tool that

allows you to see exactly what your

66

:

money is doing with a quick glance,

making your budget straightforward

67

:

and eliminating that overwhelm of

trying to remember everything because

68

:

we can't all remember everything.

69

:

All right.

70

:

Rule number two, embrace your true

expenses so beyond your immediate needs,

71

:

those bills, mortgage or rent, cell phone

bill, electricity, things like that.

72

:

Effective budgeting involves preparing

for the unexpected expected expenses.

73

:

So this is where YNAB's second

rule of embrace your true

74

:

expenses comes into play.

75

:

This tackles those irregular costs

that often catch us off guard and

76

:

end up feeling like an emergency.

77

:

So those could be things like holiday

shopping, car repairs, vet bills back

78

:

to school shopping, home maintenance,

any of those types of things.

79

:

We know they're going to happen,

we just don't know how much

80

:

they're gonna cost and when.

81

:

But by consistently setting aside

a small portion of your income.

82

:

You can take those potential

financial surprises and turn them into

83

:

manageable events, it's totally fine.

84

:

Why planning for the

unexpected is important.

85

:

Don't let irregular expenses

derail your progress.

86

:

It's so common to be going along.

87

:

Things are going great, and boom,

that expense pops up and it feels

88

:

like everything is off the rails

by following YNAB's second rule.

89

:

This encourages you to plan for those

true expenses, and it gives you a

90

:

format to do that right within the

software by setting up categories

91

:

for things like car maintenance.

92

:

Annual subscriptions, holiday bills.

93

:

You create a reliable system that replaces

those popup reminders on a post-it

94

:

note that you forget about, right?

95

:

This helps you get clarity

and control, right?

96

:

That's what we're after,

clarity and control.

97

:

Not only over the expected things, but

the things that will come up eventually.

98

:

Rule number three, roll with the punches.

99

:

So it's super common that many people

think that budgeting is restrictive, but

100

:

rule number three allows you to remove

that thinking so it acknowledges that.

101

:

Monthly spending fluctuates.

102

:

Right?

103

:

That's kind of where this budgeting,

myth of budgeting is restrictive because

104

:

you would normally sit down and put

yourself in a box and say, this is where

105

:

I'm gonna spend it every single month.

106

:

And when something goes wrong,

107

:

it feels like you've lo lost.

108

:

It feels like you failed.

109

:

Maybe you might budget $500 for

groceries this month, but then.

110

:

Spend less next month.

111

:

Maybe the following month

you'll spend slightly more.

112

:

That's okay.

113

:

YNAB provides the

solution with flexibility.

114

:

Not only is it easy to move money

between categories, it's encouraged

115

:

if needed, so you don't have to stress

over small overages like an extra

116

:

$20 spent on groceries this month.

117

:

YNAB lets you quickly

move those funds around.

118

:

From one category to the next,

but maintains your overall

119

:

budget so you can still see where

everything else is accounted for.

120

:

It's this ease of moving money around

that keeps you in control and positive

121

:

about your financial progress.

122

:

Again, flexibility is the key

with YNAB by following Rule three

123

:

of rolling with the punches.

124

:

This allows for dynamic budgeting, so

it means you're not locked into that

125

:

rigid box, that plan that says you can't

spend more than X amount of dollars.

126

:

YNAB gives you the real time

information that you need to be

127

:

able to make adjustments once

a month or even day to day?

128

:

And this proactive approach helps you

manage your money more effectively.

129

:

Making small corrections before

they become big problems.

130

:

And finally, rule number

four is age your money.

131

:

Imagine this for a second.

132

:

Imagine a life beyond the

paycheck to paycheck struggle.

133

:

That's the power of YNAB's* Rule four.

134

:

Basically what we're doing is

we're creating a time buffer

135

:

between when you get paid.

136

:

And when you spend that money, this

will help you build a financial

137

:

foundation that allows your money

to work for you, and it helps you

138

:

relieve some of that stress, really.

139

:

And that's really the one of the

biggest things we're looking for, right?

140

:

Because the ultimate aim is to

reach the point where you can live

141

:

comfortably on last month's income.

142

:

So you, so the paycheck that came

in last month is what is what you're

143

:

using to pay your bills today.

144

:

So if you get paid tomorrow, it's not

turning around and being spent, it is

145

:

being budgeted for next month's expenses.

146

:

That's where things start

to get really great.

147

:

So again, breaking that paycheck to

paycheck cycle, if you're tired of

148

:

what I lovingly maybe refer to as.

149

:

Banking roulette.

150

:

You know that nerve wracking

game of which is gonna hit

151

:

first your paycheck or the bill.

152

:

I've been there.

153

:

It's not a place that I recommend

anyone being, it's not where we

154

:

want to be, it's, it's not Provide

a stress free financial situation.

155

:

YNAB's Rule Four offers that solution

by creating that financial cushion.

156

:

Y NAB helps you avoid those close

calls and those fears of overdraft

157

:

fees, providing you the financial

peace of mind that you're looking for.

158

:

All right, let's do a quick

recap of the four rules.

159

:

Rule number one, give every dollar

a job know exactly where your money

160

:

is going by assigning a specific

purpose to every single dollar,

161

:

whether that's $50 or $5,000.

162

:

Give every dollar a job.

163

:

Rule number two, embrace

your true expenses.

164

:

This rule emphasizes planning

for the irregular but predictable

165

:

expenses and helps prevent them

from derailing your entire budget.

166

:

Rule number three, roll with the punches,

acknowledging that life is unpredictable.

167

:

This role encourages flexibility and

adjustments to your budget as needed.

168

:

Again, it's okay.

169

:

It's not a failure.

170

:

You are making informed

decisions with new information.

171

:

And rule number four, age your money.

172

:

This rule again, focuses on building

a time buffer between earning and

173

:

spending, allowing you to move away

from living a paycheck to paycheck cycle

174

:

and start gaining financial stability.

175

:

Of course this process takes some

time and de dedication and achieving

176

:

financial mastery with these rules

requires consistent effort and time.

177

:

However, I promise you the

reward is well worth it.

178

:

The increased awareness of your

spending habits, which often relate.

179

:

Actually leads to reduced

spending and increased savings

180

:

for your long-term goals.

181

:

Those greatest life things

that we always talk about.

182

:

What is it that you truly

want more money for?

183

:

Those things that creates that

positive cycle of financial growth.

184

:

So instead of fearing these guidelines,

take a moment to let them digest, and

185

:

then embrace them as a starting point for

your journey to financial freedom, because

186

:

with patience and commitment, you can

build a more secure and prosperous future.

187

:

There you have it.

188

:

Those are our four original

YNAB rules, like I mentioned.

189

:

Again, next week we will talk about

the new five questions they share.

190

:
